First of all that is going to be one crazy family tree. The outcome of that family tree is what makes Oedipus Rex such an amazing example of a tragedy.
I am going to relate this to making our decisions blog. I believe that there is a guided path that each person has in this world, and you get to make your own choices but somehow you will end up in the correct destination, and this plays perfecting into Oedipus and Jocasta. A prophecy was given and they did not like it, so they tried to do everything they could to make it not become true, and they did... or so they thought.
Oedipus defeated the sphinx and became the ruler of this land, and married the old rulers wife. They had multiple children together and thought nothing about it. Until their town Thebes was infected by a plague and Oedipus needed to find a solution. He asked why the town is having such bad fortunate and its revealed that man who killed Laius the ruler before him, still lives in the city. Oedipus said this person will be exiled, even if it was him.
Now this is where the prophecy starts to take place. It was said that Oedipus would kill his father and then be found in his mothers bed. Jocasta, his wife had the same prophecy. They both took steps to prevent this. Jocasta left her son to die three days after birth, and Oedipus so he would not kill his father or sleep with his mother.
Fate had a different idea though. Long story short Jocasta gave birth to Oedipus, and when she left him to die, he did not. He was given a ruler of another land. Not knowing that his parents were not his biological parents he left. On his journey away from home, he met up with so men and ended up killing them, within that group of men, his actual father. Due to both Oedipus and Jocasta believing they prevented the prophecy they did not think anything of it when they got married and started a family.
They later found out about all of this and simply could not accept that they came to the fate that they tried so hard to prevent. Jocasta ended up hanging herself and Oedipus blinded himself by stabbing his eyes repeatedly.
This all relates to a tragedy because first of all, nobody who is sane wants to sleep with their mother. Secondly, despite trying so hard, fate always came back to find them. Which is a tough lesson to learn because they thought they had control over the situation but they just made it worse. Lastly, Oedipus Rex has all the qualities a tragedy needs. A somewhat comical story line, and good lesson.
Lesson learned, don't sleep with your mother.
