What makes someone successful? Money, fame, a great job, a big family, a big mansion or a fancy car. Those are all things that make someone successful or what society makes us think success is. "In this life people care more about materialistic items than careers". In the Ted talk we are told that many people perceive success as what society believes is successful not actually what their own idea is.
In today's society we are constantly being judged, many people care what other think of them and are always seeking approval. "This is because people are snobs, this is not something just found in England, this is a global phenomena." A snob is anyone who judges based on one aspect. Most commonly found in ones success in life. "Individuals care more about social hierarchy", and if you are higher it changes their perception of you.
Success, should be off of how you as an individual think of it, and knowing that you worked for it. When success is given I feel like it is worse for that person, because they will not care as much. With one of these you were given choice to be successful and with the same on it makes failure feel much worse, because you earned it. Much like the choice above, "there are people in this world who are unfortunate and people who are losers". You can choose to be one of these, there is a big difference.
The talk then goes to relate the literally device of tragedy to success. He says that "we fear failing, because we fear judgement and ridicule of others". This can be related to the tragedy of the common man, because it says that "fear is tragedy itself". Tragedy traces how people fail but not success. This then comes full circle because we need to define success not others, because by first glance, you don't know anyones true value. However, you need to remember that you won't be success at everything, and that is ok-- and you should be ok with that, because you know what makes you successful.
