This past week we were given a poem called the Eagle. It was very short but had many details. We were told to read it so we did, we then went on to talk about and make connections. Now usually in past english classes we would have not revisted the poem and probably would not have talked about it again. However the class over the next few day read it multiple times, and with each read the piece was dissected more.
Everyone one on the first day had there own ideas and what the story was really about, such as was it a higher power, an actual eagle or was a it representation of the United States. After rereading the poem individuals perspectives changed and we started to notice more than usual. We as a class dug into the deeper meaning of the story, everything from the words used, actions, and "is this really what the author meant". I realize that everyone has their own options and that really showed during this activity. What one word meant to me could and did mean something totally different to one of my classmates.
I really enjoyed this activity because it made me realize that one little 6 line poem could be Interpreted in so many ways and an individual could read the piece so many times and come up with a different meaning everytime. I realize that this activity is used to help us prepare for the AP test but I also feel like even after one small lesson I will use the strategy in everyday reading too.
