I enjoyed how this related to the activity we did on the first day of school too. We were told to write down 3 things or events that got us this point in our life, as we walked down the sidewalk. Each hash on the sidewalk represented a year in a year in our life. Everyone ended at around the spot and we found that although similar, we had different events.
That then correlated to our reader/writer stories, Despite all of our backgrounds and unique qualities there was always someone who you could relate to. Our experiences mostly started as we kids, most of us learned to read and write this way and as we grew up we continued our path down the sidewalk, to the place we are now, to the reader and writer we are today. This activity not only let me express myself but I feel like I know my classmates better. As we go throughout the school year the connection we establish through activities like this will continue to grow.
Even though it is for little kids, I am adding a link to reading games because that is how I personally learned to like reading. http://pbskids.org/games/reading/
